Maoist surrenders in Koraput

Koraput, Sep 19

An armed Maoist surrendered before the police in Koraput district following alleged discrimination and torture by Telegu ultras towards Odia tribal cadres, police said on Thursday.

With a desire to lead a normal life, Jhadu Huika of Gorkhajhola village under Narayanpatna police limits laid down arms in the present of DIG (south-west range) S Devadutta Singh yesterday.

“Odia cadres are being discriminated against in camps by Maoist leaders belonging to Andhra Pradesh. We are not being provided with proper uniforms and shoes and are asked to work for longer hours. I complained about it to our leaders several times, but to no avail. Also, life in forest was miserable. Hence, I decided to surrender,” said Huka after surrendering.

Police said Huika had joined the Maoist backed Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh of Narayanpatna in 2008 and was providing logistics support to the Maoists group of Srikakulam-Koraput Joint Divisional Committee.

“Huika was coordinating the movement and meetings of Maoists prior to being inducted in the armed squad of the Maoists in 2011-12. He was trained in using arms and was carrying a 303 gun,” said Koraput Superintendent of Police Awinash Kumar.

“The Naxal has confessed to his involvement in around ten incidents. He will be rehabilitated as per the government’s surrender policy,” he said. (PTI)
