Malkangiri, Jun 20:
A Maoist was killed and arms and ammunition seized during an encounter on the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border early this morning.
According to reports, a joint combing operation was launched by the Odisha and Andhra Pradesh police in the morning following a tip-off that a group of Maoists have set up camps in the bordering areas.
The joint combing team came face to face with a group of about 15 Maoists between Kindupara and Gabarapara in Rangabayilu panchayat in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday morning. While one Maoist was killed in the exchange of fire that followed, the others managed to escape into the surrounding forests, sources said.
“Maoists suddenly opened fire at the police at Gobarapada village in Andhra Pradesh bordering Malkangiri district. The joint team retaliated immediately killing one Maoist,” Malkangiri SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra told media persons.
“The encounter is still on between the police and the Maoists”, the SP added.
Two rifles, four grenades and 11 kit bags were recovered from the spot, south-western range IG Yashwant Jethwa informed. “The encounter is still on. So it has not been possible to identify the Maoist killed in the encounter,” he said adding the combing operation had been intensified in the area.
The killed Maoist is around 25 years of age, sources said.
Security forces suspect that some more Maoists could have been killed or injured in the encounter.
