Malkangiri: A Maoist was killed during a joint operation by SOG, DVF and Greyhounds near Panashapadar village under Chitrakonda block of Odisha’s Malkangiri district, informed ADG (Operations) RP Koche today.

During a combing operation in the cut-off areas of the district, SOG and DVF of Odisha and Greyhounds of Andhra Pradesh, acting on a tip-off about the presence of Maoists near the village, raided the place.

The extremists opened fire at the security forces following which the latter retaliated, resulting in death of a Maoist. Several Maoists reportedly sustained injuries in the exchange of fire and managed to escape.

The body of the deceased Maoist and two rifles have been seized from the spot.

Notably, an exchange of fire had taken place between Maoists and a joint team of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh security forces near Balimela reservoir here yesterday. The Maoists had reportedly blasted landmines during the gunbattle.

It may be recalled here that seven Maoists were killed in separate encounters with security personnel in Kandhamal and Balangir districts recently.
