Maoists kill STF jawan, blow up rail track on Odisha border

Malkangiri, Feb 19:

A Special Task Force (STF) jawan was killed in an encounter with the Maoists in Dhudhiraj forest area under Kuakonda police station limits of Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh bordering Odisha this morning.

Derailed railway wagonsSources said the STF and the District Voluntary Force (DVF) personnel were on a combing operation this morning following intelligence input on the presence of the Maoists in the forest area.

During the operation, the Maoists suddenly opened fire at the security personnel who retaliated immediately. However, a STF jawan succumbed to the bullet injuries.

The Maoists later fled the area.

Following information, additional police force has rushed to spot, the sources added.

In another incident, seven wagons of a goods train were derailed after the Maoist blew up the track near Kamalpur in Dantewada district at about noon today.

Following the incident, a team of CRPF personnel and railway officials have rushed to the spot.

Efforts are on to repair the track to restore train service in the route.
