Actor Manideepa Mallick today refused to accept the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award which has been mired in controversy over alleged nepotism.
Incidentally, Manideepa is the wife of Akademi’s secretary Dhirendranath Mallick. The award which was announced five days ago for the year 2014 and 2015 had put questions over its neutrality after the name of Manideepa found place in the list of awardees.
In a press conference held here today, she announced her decision to not take the award owing the controversy.
“I am unwilling to receive the honour as people are saying bad things about me, my son and my husband despite me deserving the honour. I thank the Akademi and request them not to bestow me with the honour,” Manideepa Mallick told media.
Notably, the awards were announced last Wednesday and would be presented at a special ceremony to be held here on March 29. The awardees would receive a cash reward of Rs 30, 000, a citation and a memento.
The awards are the highest honour for performing arts in the state.
It may be mentioned that the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi is an aided institution under the management of Culture Department of state government. It promotes research in the field of dance, drama & music to establish model institutions devoted to teaching & research of dance, drama & music.
