A 45-year old man was trampled to death by wild elephants in Mayurbhanj district.
The victim, identified as Ramesh Lohar of Batapalasa village, had gone into the Dudhiani range of Karanjia forest division on Thursday. His body was spotted by forest personnel yesterday, divisional forest officer (DFO), Karanjia, Asish Kumar Behera said today.
A herd of 18 elephants, including two tuskers from neighbouring Jharkhand had strayed into the area over a year ago and was roaming villages under Karanjia forest division in Mayurbhanj and the adjoining Keonjhar district and had caused extensive damage to crops and houses in the area.
In Dudhiani and Sukrali forest ranges, the herd had damaged a room and boundary wall of Dudhiani forest range at Tota and damaged 10 houses in nearby Bola yesterday.
Forest personnel, with the help of local people, often chase the jumbos away by blowing trumpets, beating drums and using other methods. But the herd returns after two or three months, Behera said.
