A 40 year-old man was shot dead by an unidentified person near a temple in Jatni town in Odisha’s Khordha district on Friday night, reports said.
The deceased was identified as Balakrushna Baliarsingh alias Kusha of Khudupur village under Jatni police limits.
Baliarsingh, who was also the president of a local auto rickshaw association, was attending a meeting inside the temple premises along with other office bearers of the association, when an unidentified assailant shot at him and fled the spot.
The assailant was wearing a monkey cap that nearly covered his face, making it difficult for those present at the spot to identify him, sources said.
Police sources said the assailant who was holding a revolver in his hand first asked the people sitting around Baliarsingh to leave the place before pulling the trigger from a pointblank position.
The incident occured around 10 pm on Friday night.
The reason behind the murder is not known yet, but the police said, gang war could have been a possible cause.
Baliarsingh allegedly had links with a dominant gang in Jatni and there were a number of cases pending against him, local sources said.
The police have recovered the khoka of a bullet from the spot of the incident.
