Man sentenced to life for ‘witch hunting’

In yet another case of ‘witch hunting’, a man was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Thursday for killing a woman suspecting her to be a witch.
Holding Prafulla Santara, a tribal of Badabhalia village, guilty of killing Jhunumani Santara (25) of the same village on October 6, 2011, Additional District Judge, Baripada, Asanta Kumar Das also imposed Rs 1,000 fine on the convict. In the event of failure to pay the fine, Santara would have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for another six years, the judge said in his verdict.
According to prosecution, Prafulla suspected Jhunumani to be a witch after his family suffered from a series of ailments and clubbed her to death.
Altogether 19 persons had deposed before the court as witness in connection with the case.
