Man killed in jumbo attack in Odisha

Rourkela, May 10:

A 45-year-old man of Bhandih village under Bonai forest range in Odisha’s Sundargarh district was trampled to death by a herd of elephants this morning.

elephant herdSources said the deceased, identified as Ekadasia Kisan (45), had gone to Gogua reserve forest with a fellow villager to collect firewood this morning when the duo was chased by a herd of wild elephants. While the marauding jumbos trampled Ekadasia to death, his fellow villager managed to escape.

The incident took place at about 11 AM.

Following information, Bonai forest range officials and the police rushed to the spot and recovered the body.
The Forest department gave Rs 10000 to the family members of deceased for cremation.

“The department would pay the rest amount of Rs 2.9 lakh to them towards compensation”, B Das, Ranger, Bonai Forest Range, said.

In another incident, three members of a family were injured when a wild tusker attacked them while they were asleep on the varandah of their house at Nuadera village under Panposh forest range of Rourkela Forest Division at 1.30 AM on Saturday.

The villagers rushed the three injured—Nirmal Das (58), Prafulla Das (52) and Bikas Das (22)— to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) where their condition was stated to be stable.

The Forest department have given Rs 8000 to the injured persons for their treatment, said PK Dhal, ACF, Rourkela Forest Division.
