As many as 15 Congress workers and 5 BJP activists, including district presidents of both parties, were detained by police before Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s visit to Malkangiri amid bandh called by the two parties in the district today.


In the backdrop of deaths of more than 100 children due to Japanese Encephalitis in Malkangiri, the Congress and BJP have given the bandh call in the district protesting Patnaik’s visit here to lay foundation stones and inaugurate several projects.

While shops and business establishments remained closed, vehicular movement came to a grinding halt due to the bandh. Congress activists blocked road at Balimela here by burning tyres, sources said.

Inspector General, Operations, RP Koche and SP Mitrabhanu Mahapatra visited the CM’s meeting spot at DNK playground here and inspected the security arrangements.

As many as 32 platoons of police force have been deployed in the district to avoid any untoward incident and the district border has been sealed.
