Bhubaneswar, Aug 2:
A day after Chhattisgarh Water Resources Department Minister claimed that they have a receipt of the letter that had been sent to Odisha Government to intimate construction of Kelo project on Mahanadi, Biju Janata Dal veteran and Excise Minister Damodar Rout today questioned the efficiency of Odisha government officials over the issue.
“They (Chhattisgarh Government) are claiming that they have sent a letter, have received the receipt and have a copy of the same. The Chief Secretary of Odisha, who is the head of the administration here, is saying that Odisha hasn’t received any letter. Who do you trust! The letter could have been vanished,” said Rout humorously.
“The larger question is, how could we — those of us at the lower catchment of the river — not get a trace of it. What was the high level committee formed to manage the Hirakud dam doing? What action has been taken against them?”
“The second point is: it should be estimated how Hirakud reservoir would get affected if it doesn’t receive sufficient water from Chhattisgarh. I can say from my personal experience is that electricity production would get affected. In that case, the people of Odisha should take a stand and argue for disallowing supply of coal from Talcher to nine of the power plants in southern India,” he added.
It may be mentioned here that Odisha Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi had yesterday said that approval for Kelo project has been taken “behind our back” and Odisha Government had no clue about it.
