Bhubaneswar, May 8:
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik yesterday unveiled the logo and mascot of the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships scheduled to be held at the Kalinga Stadium here from July 6 to 9.
Patnaik also formally announced Bhubaneswar as the host for the sports event.
The mascot, named Olly Turtle, depicts the Olive Ridley turtles as Odisha’s Gahirmatha beach is a prime mass nesting site for the endangered species.
More than 700 athletes from around 45 countries would participate in 42 events — 21 for men and 21 for women.
Among others, Sports minister Chandra Sarathi Behera, senior officials from Athletics Federation of India (AFI), legendary athletes PT Usha and Anju Bobby George were present at the announcement ceremony of the mega sporting event held at Kalinga Hockey Stadium.
The ceremony was studded with fireworks, performances by Ollywood stars Sabyasachi Mishra and Archita Sahu and singing sensation Rituraj Mohanty.
