Keonjhar, May 25:
Protest by locals against undeclared power cut in Odisha’s Keonjhar town took an ugly turn today as they put shoe garland on an official of North Eastern Electricity Supply Company of Odisha Limited (NESCO).
According to reports, members of Keonjhar civil society had gheraoed the NESCO office here demanding assurance of no power cut in the area and returning of Best Electrical Division Award received by Keonjhar division of NESCO.
An exchange of words ensued between the agitators and NESCO officials following which the former reportedly manhandled sub-divisional officer Maheswar Sethy and put shoe garland on him.
They later released the official after getting written assurance of no power cut in the region.
“The residents of Keonjhar are suffering in the scorching heat wave due to long hours of power cut. The electricity officials are not willing to hold discussion with the locals for solution. We gheraoed the NESCO office today as a mark of protest. The agitation will intensify in future if our demands are not met,” a agitator said.
“Repairing of old electric poles which got damaged during the nor’wester is leading to power cut in the area,” the official said.
