Jeypore, Jun 11:
Residents of Odisha’s Jeypore today vehemently opposed the local administration after it attempted to demolish a Shiv temple and a Sai temple built in the Gandhi park near the municipality office in the town.
Angry mob staged a demonstration and went on to gherao the district collector demanding the temples to be spared by the municipality.
The situation, however, was brought under control after much persuasion and the demolition drive continued.
“Antisocial elements had taken over this area since a long time. We had built a small Sai temple here so that people can gather in this place to offer prayers and the place becomes safe because of the religious crowd. Where was the administration when all sort of illegal activities happened here? It failed to see why we had built the temple and razed it,” said a visibly upset Sai devotee.
“The municipality authorities today brought down the temples of Lord Nrusinghanath and Lord Sai in the name of illegal construction. Lord Nrusinghanath temple had been there since princely era. The demolition has hurt the religious sentiments of the locals. It cannot be justified in any case,” said a local.
