Bhubaneswar: Police resorted to lathi charge on BJP workers near Master Canteen Square in Odisha capital today after the latter broke security cordon in a bid to gherao Naveen Nivas, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s residence.
Several BJP leaders, members of BJP Mahila Morcha and hundreds of party workers marched from the party state headquarters towards Naveen Nivas holding banners and placards targeting the state government over the death of Kunduli ‘gang rape’ victim.
They were stopped by policemen near Master Canteen Square following which a scuffle ensued between the two groups which later took an ugly turn as the cops lathicharged the saffron party workers after they broke the cordon, pelted stones and tried to move towards Naveen Nivas.
Several workers of the party and some policemen reportedly sustained injuries during the incident. Many BJP workers were later taken into preventive custody.
Similar scenes were witnessed near Naveen Nivas as members of Mahila Congress tried to head towards the CM’s residence over the victim’s death issue. Around 20 activists of the women’s wing of Congress have been detained in this connection.
