A 45-year-old lady doctor committed suicide by jumping off the 8th floor of Banalata Apartment in Saheed Nagar area in the Odisha capital this afternoon.
Though the incident took place around 1.30 pm, the body of the deceased was reportedly recovered an hour later by the police, who were informed by residents of the apartment.
The deceased. identified as Dr. Swetapadma Mishra, a gynecologist working at the Jagannath Hospital located under Saheed Nagar police limits, was rushed to Apollo hospital in the city where she was declared brought dead. Her body was then shifted to Capital hospital here for the customary post-mortem.
Police have recovered the footwear and a spectacles of the deceased lying on the terrace of the building from where she jumped to death.
Saheed Nagar police, along with a forensic team, are at the apartment to gather facts behind the strange death and are interrogating the in-laws of the deceased. Police sources said the reason behind the death of Swetapadma, wife of Dr Arijit Mohapatra, a paediatrician at the same hospital, is yet to be ascertained.
“We have registered a case of unnatural death in connection with the incident. Investigation is on to find out the actual reason behind the woman’s death,” said the investigating officer of the case.
Meanwhile, the parents of the deceased have lodged a complaint at the Sahid Nagar police station alleging murder by their in-laws.
The mother-in-law of the deceased, however, ruled out any foul play saying; “She had a mental problem and was upset for sometime. She might have committed suicide in that state.”
A neighbour of the deceased said while he and his family members were in their flat, they heard a loud sound. When they came of their house to see the woman lying on the ground floor with blood oozing out of her body parts.
