Deogarh, Oct 13:

An act that would hang our heads in shame, fellow villagers in an Odisha village stripped a young woman in the middle of the village main road, rained blows and kicks suspecting her to be a witch.

According to the police, during Jhamu Jatra in Derapathar village in Raitabahal panchayat under Barakote police limits in Deogarh district at around 11 AM on Wednesday, a minor girl who was claimed to be possessed by kalisi (intermediaries or messengers between the human world and the spirit worlds) told onlookers that the young woman (name not revealed to protect identity) along with one Dusasan Dehury was practicing black magic near a tree and would cause loss to her family.

The minor girl then picked up a dana (cup made of leaves) kept on a nearby tree and moved towards the young woman’s house and was followed by her family members and other villagers.

The minor girl (kalisi) calling the young woman to come out of her house said: “You are practicing black magic. You have killed several persons.”

The minor girl’s family members along with other villagers dragged the woman by her hair through the village road to the village mandap. In presence of hundreds of men and women they showered blows and kicks and finally removed her saree. Later, they tore apart her blouse and petticoat leaving her fully nude.

The woman along with the gramrakhi went to the police station in the evening yesterday and lodged a written complaint.

“We have registered a case under sections 448, 294, 323, 354, 506/34 sections of the IPC. The matter is under investigation,” said Brahmanand Patra, IIC Barkote police station.
