Kandhamal killings: SIT begins second phase probe

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Odisha government to probe into the death of five tribals in Kandhamal district during an anti-Maoist operation, started its second phase investigation today.


Worth mentioning, a three-member team led by Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) SP Gurudas Kundu is probing the incident.

“In the first phase, we conducted investigation from July 17 to 27. The second phase probe started today. We are ascertaining how the firing took place,” said Kundu.

Notably, the SIT had submitted 15 guns of SOG jawans, over 30 empty cartridges and clothes of deceased before the Baliguda Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) on July 22 after completion of first phase investigation.

During the course of the investigation, the probe team had produced two eyewitnesses before the Baliguda SDJM court to record their statements.

It may be recalled here that five tribals from Gumudumaha were killed during an anti-Maoist operation near Kurtamgarh in Kandhamal on the night of July 8.
