Bhubaneswar, Dec 25:
Odisha unit of Congress today announced that it will stage a two-hour long road blockade across all the district headquarters of the state tomorrow demanding Rs 12 lakh compensation for the victims who lost their lives to Japanese Encephalitis.
Announcing the decision, Odisha unit Vice President Pradeep Majhi – who along with his supporters have been on a strike in front of the Governor’s House since past five days pressing for his demands that include compensation for JE deaths —said that his party will resort to road blockade between 10 AM and noon tomorrow as the State Government did not listen to his party’s rightful demands.
“The State Government is quick to give away Rs 12 lakh for accidental deaths immediately after it happened (SUM fire tragedy) in Bhubaneswar. However, it has announced a compensation of only Rs 3 lakh for Japanese Encephalitis victims even though that is a government-made tragedy. Besides, it will be given to only about 35 victims who are on government record. How about the 500 plus other victims? We are not happy with the arrangement and reject it,” said Majhi.
He further added that Congress will further intensify its demonstration and will take it to villages, should the State Government fail to respond.
Apart from JE deaths, Congress has been asking the government to close the doctor vacancies across all the hospitals in Kalahandi, Bolangir and Koraput districts. Besides, punishment for the culprits in Gumudumaha shootout incident is also high on their agenda.
