The District and Sessions Court of Odisha’s Rayagada today pronounced its verdict in the sensational Tikiri Upper Primary School teacher Itishree Pradhan murder case.
The court held prime accused former School Inspector (SI) Netrananda Dandasena guilty in connection with her murder and sentenced him to life term.
The verdict was pronounced based on the charge sheet filed by Odisha Crime Branch.
“The government had handed over the case to Crime Branch on November 1, 2013 – four days after the incident. Even though, the case had been lodged under section-307 of IPC initially, later, it was changed to section – 302 of IPC,” said Crime Branch Special DG BK Sharma speaking to reporters today.
“A chargesheet had been filed against Netrananda Dandasena under various sections of IPC including section-302 (murder) on February 22, 2014. The trial of the case started in November 2014 and we had produced 36 witnesses in the last one and half year for examination in the court. Four dying declarations were submitted that included the declarations in front of the Tehsildar and the CDMO”.
“The verdict came out today. Netrananda Dandasena has been awarded a life term for criminal conspiracy, abetment and murder under sections – 120B, 109 and 302 respectively. We feel proud that we have been able to deliver justice to her,” he added.
Notably, the hearing of the case was completed on April 4. While 36 persons had deposed from the prosecution side in the case, only five has deposed for the opposite side.
Itishree Pradhan– a lady teacher of Tikiri Upper Primary School in Rayagada district– was set on fire inside her room in the school campus on the night of October 27, 2013. She later succumbed to her injuries at the CARE Hospital at Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on November 1, 2013.
