Tension ran high in the premises of SUM hospital here today as hundreds of intern MBBS doctors went on a rampage following death of a fellow intern, who had been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
The deceased Mitrabhanu Sai was an intern doctor from Bolangir, who was admitted to the hospital on Saturday with Sickle Cell Anemia.
Hospital sources said he was brought to the hospital in an extremely critical condition. Sai died late on Sunday night.Once the news reached his colleagues, they went berserk accusing the doctors-in-charge of medical negligence leading to his death.
More than 100 doctors ransacked the hospital premises and damaged several items, including furniture and glass doors at the reception desk. One platoon of police rushed to the spot and intervened to bring the situation under control.
The main gate of the hospital was shut for more than three hours preventing patients from moving inside following the incident. A police team was stationed at the hospital for more than six hours.
Authorities of the Sum Hospital, however, have denied allegations that there was any laxity or neglect in the treatment.
