Bamra, Sep 15:
Marriages these days are made on the internet, but the perils are many as a 26-year- old girl and her family in an Odisha village found out recently. They were duped of more than Rs 3.5 lakhs by the ‘groom’ they had found through an internet matrimony site.
Rabinarayan Sahu found a proposal for his daughter 26-year old daughter Swapnarani Sahu’s marriage with 30-year-old Swagat Maharana, son of Nakulchandra Maharana from Markatnagar in Cuttack city through a matrimony site in February this year . Swagat came to visit the girl on March 6 and promised to fetch a job for Swapnarani introducing himself as an official in the HR department of L & T.
After the marriage was finalised, Swagat took Rs 30,000 and Rs 1, 20,000 in two instalments to get het the job. He sent a fake employment letter in April and followed it up with another in May asking her to join, but only after depositing Rs 85,000 in a bank account. He then started delaying the joining date.
In the last week of May, Swagat had called the girl’s family to Angul court and did a registry marriage. He then asked the bride’s family to pay Rs 1,00,000 towards the wedding feast. After much reluctance, the girl’s father had paid the amount into his bank account. The girl’s father gave Rs 25,000 in cash, three gold rings and a gold chain at the social marriage done in a temple in Angul.
After marriage, the couple stayed in Bhubaneswar in a rented house. But soon Swagat started harassing her asking for more money. He told Swapna that he would take her to his house in Cuttack only after she brought Rs 2 lakhs and a Scooty from her father. When she refused, he locked her in the bathroom and ran away. Swapna was rescued after two days by her landlord and reached home.
After they lodged a complaint in Govindpur police station, the police informed their counterparts in Cuttack who have now arrested Swagat Maharana.
