Most parts of Odisha have come under intense cold wave with the mercury plummeting below 5 degree Celsius in many areas on Saturday.
While Barbil in Keonjhar district recorded the lowest temperature with 3.4 degree, other areas of the district like Gonasika, Kiriburu, and Keonjhar town recorded the lowest temperature with 5, 5.3 and 7.9 degree Celsius respectively.
In Kandhamal district, Daringbadi recorded the lowest temperature with 4 degree while it was 5 degree at Baliguda, 5.5 at Tumudibandh, 5.2 at K. Nuagan, 6 at Raikia and 6.5 at G. Udayagiri.
While normal life in these districts have been disrupted, a number of birds and fish at Belghar, Daringbadi, Tumudibandh, Kotagarh, Baliguda and Phulbani areas are found dead due to the intense cold, reports said.
Attendance at educational institutions in many areas of the tribal dominated district also thinned in the past three days due to the piercing cold.
While the busy thoroughfares and market places in these districts remain deserted in the early evening and morning hours, people are found huddled around bonfires for warmth along the roadside.
Mercury levels have also come down to single digit at Angul (9.6), Sundargarh (7.9), Bhawanipatna (9.5), Koraput (9.8) and Titlagarh (9).
The cold wave conditions would continue for the next 48 hours, the local Met office here said.
