Cuttack, Oct 18:
The Justice PK Mohanty Commission of Inquiry, probing the sensational Babina gang rape and murder case in Pipili, has issued a notice to the Odisha government asking as to why the additional director general (ADG) of the state Crime Branch would not be interrogated in this case.
The decision of the Commission came in response to a petition filed by advocate Nishikanta Mishra at the Commission’s office here on Friday.
In his petition, advocate Mishra told the Commission that while Crime Branch Investigating Officer (IO) in his earlier deposition had stated that the Crime Branch has not probed into the political interference in this case, the family members of the victim have alleged that proper treatment was not provided to the victim due to political pressure.
Considering the above, Mishra urged the Commission to seek a clarification from the Crime Branch ADG in this regard.
He also informed that since the Pipili MLA Pradip Maharathi and the Home secretary have filed affidavits before the Commission, they should be interrogated as per Section B of the Commission of Inquiry Act.
In a separate petition before the Commission on Friday senior advocate Pravat Ranjan Das said it was due to the intervention of the State Women’s Commission and Odisha State Human Rights Commission that the state government had provided treatment facilities to the Pipili gang rape victim.
He also prayed to the Commission that it would be appropriate to submit the inquiry report of the State Women’s Commission which came after victim’s family had requested it for a probe into the incident.
The Commission will have a hearing of the petition later, sources said.
