Mistaken identity: Odisha youth arrested for no crime

Jagatsinghpur: In a weird incident, a youth was arrested over mistaken identity and put behind the bars for the crime that he had never committed.

The Madhupatna police landed in trouble for mistakenly arresting the youth in connection with a bomb explosion case in Jagatsinghpur district.

The victim was identified as Bharat Kumar Barik, who is now lodged in Choudwar jail.

According to reports, Police had earlier arrested the prime accused Tapan Nanda alias Tapu in 2010 bomb blast incident in Madhupatna area. On basis of statement recorded from Tapu, police had been looking for his associate Bharat Bhushan Barik alias Sandip, a resident of Alasudha in Jagatsinghpur district, for seven years in connection with the case.

Coincidently, a youth namely Bharat Kumar Barik, who is currently lodged in jail, a son of Bishnu Charan Barik of Palasudha area in the district, had visited his home on Oct 29. He was working in Karnataka. The Madhupatna police suddenly raided his home on Nov 5 and wrongfully arrested Bharat thinking him as the accused. He was brought to Cuttack and forwarded to court on Nov 6.

Instead of arresting the real accused Bharat Bhushan Barik, a youth with the similar name became the victim of the improper investigation by the police.

The fact came to fore after the victim’s lawyer Srinivas Parija applied a bail for him.

The youth’s family alleged before the Jagatsinghpur SP and collector against Madhupatna police for the arrest of a wrong person, who is now spending his days and nights in the jail for no crime.
