Bhubaneswar, Nov 30:
Excise minister Niranjan Pujari on Friday admitted in the State Assembly that illegal ganja (marijuana ) cultivation is rampant in 10 districts of the state.
“Illegal ganja cultivation is in full swing in Angul, Debagarh, Sambalpur, Boudh, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Rayagada Sambalpur and Brahmapur”, Pujari said in his reply to a question from member Alekh Kumar Jena.
The minister said during the last four years, 50 persons, involved in ganja cultivation, have been arrested and forwarded to court.
Efforts are on by the Excise, Police, Forest and Revenue department officials to completely stop illegal cultivation, he added.
About 10.6 lakh ganja plants each in Angul and Debagarh districts, 7.63 lakh in Sambalpur, 4.6 lakh in Boudh and 4.9 lakh in Rayagada district were destroyed by the Excise officials last year, the minister informed.
