The farmers of Odisha’s Nabarangpur district are distraught over the massive loss to the maize crop caused by the cyclonic storm Hudhud.
As per the preliminary assessment report by the district administration, about 1945 hectares of maize crop in Beheda and Benara panchayats of Umerkote block, Sunabeda panchayat of Jharigan block and Kurabeda, Guna, Ganjapada and Kacharapada panchayats of Raighar block have been severely damaged.
Apart from this, about 932 hectares of sugar cane in Sindhiguda and Ekamba panchayats of Nabarangpur block, Chirima and Santoshpur panchayats of Kasagumuda block and Nuagada, Dahana and Dangarabheja panchayats of Nandahandi block have been extensively damaged.
Besides, about 50 percent of kharif paddy in all the blocks of the district has been very badly damaged due to strong winds and heavy rains.
Housing and Urban Development minister Pushpendra Singhdeo, who is currently on a tour to the district, today visited Sindhiguda, Nandahandi and Ekamba blocks to assess the crop loss in these areas and interacted with the cyclone affected people.
