Brahmapur, Jun 10:
The Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) of Odisha Police today started its investigation into the alleged custodial death of Gourahari Swain at Jagannath Prasad in Ganjam district.
The Officer in Charge (OIC) of the police station has been transferred to Chhatrapur while the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) has been requested to conduct a judicial enquiry into the incident.
It may be noted that Jagannath Prasad police had arrested Gourahari on Monday evening from his home on charges of theft. He was taken to hospital yesterday after his health deteriorated but breathed his last soon after.
While the cops have informed that he was suffering from stomach pain at the time of arrest and this could have caused his death, his family alleged custodial death because of torture marks visible on his body.
Locals had blocked the main road demanding suspension of the OIC and compensation to the next of kin of the deceased. The cops had to deploy two platoons of armed police and hold talks with the angry villagers to bring the situation under control.
