Burla, Sept 7:
With the Met department forecasting heavy rainfall in the upper catchments of Mahanadi river under the influence of a well-marked low pressure, authorities of the Hirakud dam in Odisha have decided to open more gates of the dam in phases today.
“As of now, we have opened 20 gates of the dam. However, considering heavy rainfall in the upper catchments of the reservoir in the next 24 hours as predicted by the Met department, we would open more gates later in the day”, Biswajeet Mohanty chief engineer of Hirakud dam, told media persons today.
The water level of the reservoir stood at 624.13 feet by 12 noon.
While 2.52 lakh cusecs of floodwater were entering into the reservoir, 3.35 lakh cusecs were being released through the 20 open gates and the powerhouse channels.
Stating that the floodwater released from the dam would take 24 hours to reach Mundali barrage, Mohanty said it would not pose any flood threat in the Mahanadi river system since there is no heavy rainfall in the lower catchments in the last 24 hours.
