Possibility of a major flood in the Mahanadi system has been averted , informed PK Mohapatra, Odisha’s Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) today.
Briefing newsmen here this morning the SRC said 11lakh cusec water is flowing at Mundali without any indication of causing trouble and that the water level in all major rivers in the state was receding.
Mohapatra said 1, 11,820 people have been shifted to safer places while a total 240 free kitchens have been opened for flood victims at different places.
The death toll due to heavy rains and floods has gone up to 34 including 19 in the current phase, he said, adding, a total of 26 breaches including both small and big have occurred at various places in the embankments of different rivers.
Meanwhile, Hirakud Dam authorities have decided to close three of the 50 open gates in view of decrease in rainfall in Mahanadi’s upper catchment in Chhattisgarh. Informing this, Biswajit Mohanty, chief engineer, Hirakud Dam said around 3 pm today they will take a call on whether to close more sluice gates in view of the decreased inflow of water into the dam.
