Bhubaneswar, Feb 23:
The former Nayagarh District Congress president Kumar Hemendra Chandra Singh who had resigned from Congress on February 20, joined the ruling BJD today.
This was along expected lines.
Singh joined the party at the BJD office here in the presence of party president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik.
The scion of the Nayagarh royal family had earlier met with the chief minister at Naveen Nivas shortly before resigning from the Congress, fueling speculation that he could join the ruling party.
Singh’s entry into BJD is bound to trigger infighting within the Nayagarh district unit of the party which is currently the stronghold of state Energy minister Arun Sahoo.
The fact that Singh is hellbent on contesting the Nayagarh assembly seat and has made this known to the BJD leadership ahead of joining the party formally, spells trouble for Sahoo who will now have to look for an alternative constituency- a prospect he may not take kindly.
The Congress today suffered a double blow with former minister and AICC member Ramkrushna Patnaik and his wife, Kumudini Patnaik, a former MP from Aska, resigning from the party.
