Bhubaneswar: Even as the South-west monsoon arrived in Odisha on June 8 bring hope for respite from hot and humid conditions, heat wave continues to prevail in the state.
The Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar has issued heat wave alert for eight districts of the state. The warning has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Khordha, Angul, Balangir and Kalahandi districts for the next 48 hours.
Notably, mercury had on Friday soared above 40 degrees Celsius at eight places in Odisha, including the Capital City. The Meteorological Centre has predicted that the monsoon will remain weak in the state till June 20.
In view of the heat wave condition, the State Government has extended summer vacation of schools by three days. The schools, which were earlier scheduled to reopen on June 18 after conclusion of summer vacation, will now reopen on June 21.
