The court granted bail to Santosh Patnaik aka Mitu who had been sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment by a lower court.

Patnaik had challenged the sentence pronounced by Cuttack district and sessions court judge on March 14, 2014 in High Court.

While Patnaik had been handed 11 years of imprisonment, he has already spent 7 years in jail, his counsel Soura Chandra Mohapatra told the High Court.

Justice Raghubir Dash headed bench took this into consideration and granted him bail.

The nun was gang raped on August 25, 2008 at Baliguda in Khandamal district.

At least nine persons were arrested, but later six were acquitted by the trial court while three others, Santosh Patnaik, Gajendra Digal and Saroj Badhei were convicted.
