Dhenkanal, Sep 30:
With 10 mild tremors being felt in the last four days, residents of Dhenkanal, especially Govindpur and its surrounding areas, are terrified to sleep in their homes at night.
The fears have increased manifold after the earth shook for 3 seconds at 2 am today. Tremors were also felt at 6: 47 pm yesterday evening.
A Geological Survey of India (GSI) team from Bhubaneswar in is visiting the district on a fact-finding mission today.
Though they have not caused any casualties, repeated tremors have led to cracks in the mud huts in the villages.
Dhenkanal, Govindpur, Manikpur, Baldiabaghi and other nearby areas are facing intermittent mild earthquakes.
The villagers claim that the tremors are preceded by a loud sound coming from the ground. No awareness programme has been initiated either by the central government or the state government on how to deal with this worrying phenomenon. This is giving rise to anger among the villagers.
People have approached local district authorities for guidance, but they have no explanation to offer.
