Bhubaneswar, Aug 5
As part of its initiative to set up an Odia University for promotion and development of Odia language in the country and abroad, a delegation took up the issue with chief secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra at the Secretariat here today.
The delegation, led by eminent linguist Debi Prasanna Pattanayak, comprised former diplomat Abasar Beuria, former BPUT Vice-Chancellor Omkarnath Mohanty, Kendrapada MLA Sipra Mallick and former chairman of Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) DK Ray.
Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Pattanayak said the next responsibility of the state after getting classical tag for Odia language is to set up a university for promotion of the language.
“While classical status can give recognition to the language inside the country, the proposed university will promote it across the globe,” he pointed out.
Efforts should be made for the promotion and publicity of Odia language in Odisha and outside the state, the members observed.
Prior to this meeting, the delegation had a discussion with chief minister Naveen Patnaik in this regard.
