Govt to promote poultry farming among women SHGs

With a view to promoting Layers poultry farming among the women self-help groups (WSHGs), the state government today directed the fisheries and animal resources development department to devise specific intervention in this regard.

Presiding over a high level meeting at the State Secretariat here, chief secretary JK Mohapatra asked the department to link up the programme with Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) of ICDS and Mid-Day Meal (MDM) programme of school and mass education department for assured marketing support.

It was revealed in the meeting that the captive requirement of eggs in Odisha is about 64 lakh ppoultryer day while the daily domestic production of eggs is about 45 lakh.

The requirement of eggs for ICDS and MDM alone is around 40 lakh per day.

The chief secretary asked the School & Mass Education department to adopt decentralized mode of production through WSHGs to narrow the gap between domestic production and requirement of eggs.

He also asked them to come up with a new plan for simple bilateral agreement among the local SHGs and school managing committees for assured supply and purchase of eggs.

The meeting decided to go for pilot projects in 10 blocks covered under Targeted Rural Initiatives for Poverty Termination (TRIPTI) and identify the WSHGs for necessary training and networking. The proposals for construction of poultry sheds under MGNREGA and financial assistance at subsidies interest rate were also discussed in the meeting.
Among others, secretary, women and child development Arati Ahuja, secretary, school and mass education Usha Padhee, director, animal husbandry Srikanta Prusty and senior officers of the concerned departments were present at the meeting
