Bhubaneswar, Sep 24:

With the poll code for the recently held urban elections out of the way, the Odisha government today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) to provide life and health insurance to sericulture farmers in the state. The scheme will be implemented from September 30.

The state government has given Rs 50 lakh by way of its assistance for the scheme through the Chief Minister’s special package. The benefits will be provided through the Sericulture Farmers’ Welfare Fund to be constituted soon, official sources said.

Rs 30,000 will be provided for normal death of a sericulture farmer while Rs 75,000 will be provided for death or complete disability due to accident. Besides, at least two children of the insured farmer will get a monthly stipend of Rs 100 from class-IX to plus two.

The Textile and Handloom department has directed its officials to prepare the list of beneficiaries as soon as possible since it will be implemented from the last day of the current month.

The health insurance scheme will be supported by the Central Silk Board.
