Govt orders closure of Bhushan plant; detains 3 plant officials

The state government on Wednesday came down heavily on the Bhusan steel plant ordering closure of the plant and detaining three plant officials for questioning after a fire in the blast furnace unit-2 of the plant that killed a worker and left 15 others were seriously injured.

The three detained plant officials are Chief Operating Officer (COO) Atulya Kumar Verma, Shift-in-charge Navin Tyagi and Head (operations) Meghpal Singh, official sources said.

The state government has asked the plant authorities to close down the plant till further orders, Labour and Employment secretary CTM Suguna said.

Minister of Forest and Environment and Labour and Employment Bijayshree Routray said authorities of the Directorate of Factories and Boilers have been asked to rush to the plant to probe the cause of fire.

Meanwhile, the condition of the 11 injured workers admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack was stated to be critical.

The incident took place at about 10 am. Fire tenders from Dhenkanal and Angul rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after four hours.
