Bhubaneswar, Feb 29:
The joy of arrival of ‘Joy’, the five-year old male giraffe in the Nandankanan Zoological Park on the outskirts of Odisha capital was short-lived as the animal died today.
The reason behind the animal’s death is yet to be ascertained, said Zoo authorities. The cause of the death will be known after the post-mortem report is out, they added.
The animal had arrived in Nandankanan Zoological Park five days back on February 24.
Forest and Environment Minister Bikram Keshari Arukh has said that he has ordered the PCCF (Wildlife) to conduct an inquiry into the animal’s death.
The male giraffe was brought here as part of an animal exchange programme – in which four tigers were sent to Alipore Zoo in exchange.
Five year old ‘Joy’ was brought here in a custom built container based on a low-bed trailer from the Kolkata based zoo under supervision of an eight member team led by assistant director of Nandankanan Zoological Park.
The Nandankanan Zoo authorities had procured the male giraffe to provide a partner to ‘Khusi’ the lone female giraffe of the Zoo and were hopeful of in captivity breeding.
