Koraput, Sep 22
An alleged fraudster was arrested by state police from Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh for carrying out online trading by using ATM card numbers and passwords of others, police said on Sunday.
The accused was identified as Smruti Ranjan Mallick of Nuagaon village in Cuttack district.
Police said an investigation was initiated following a complaint from Maheswar Behera of Ramagiri under Boipariguda police limits in Koraput district that money was being fraudulently deducted from his account.
“Behera’s wife had gone to Bhubaneswar few weeks ago and had sought the help of Mallick in withdrawing money from ATM as she was ignorant of using the ATM card. After helping the woman in withdrawing Rs.30, 000, Mallick noted down the ATM card number and password”, said Koraput Superintendent of Police Awinash Kumar.
Mallick, who uses multiple mobile and SIM cards to give police a slip, was arrested in Visakhapatnam, he added.
Using the ATM card number and password of Behera, the accused started online purchases and had already bought goods worth RS 30,000, the SP said.
Mallick bought a computer printer, mobile phones, clothes and shoes using Behera’s ATM card number from various online shopping websites. The items were seized from Mallick’s possession at the time of arrest”, he said.
“During interrogation, the names of a few persons assisting Mallick in the crime have cropped up and we are trying to arrest them”, the SP said.
Meanwhile, police have appealed to the public not to share their ATM details with strangers.
Last month, Malkangiri district police had arrested nine persons, including a woman constable, for fraudulently withdrawing cash by using cloned ATM cards, police sources said. (PTI)
