Puri, Aug 18:

Four doctors of Puri district headquarters hospital resigned today citing lack of security for physicians at the health centre after some relatives of a patient who died at the medical last night locked the main gate of the hospital this morning.

According to reports, one Nabakishore Jena of Batagaon was admitted to the hospital last night as he complained of chest pain. Though doctors declared him brought dead, the family members of the deceased alleged that he died due to negligence in treatment at the hospital.

The irate kins of Jena ransacked the hospital by smashing chairs, tables, computers, ACs, lights, oxygen cylinder and allegedly manhandled the doctors.

On being informed about the incident, police reached the spot and took the situation under control.

“The patient wasn’t attended by anyone for half an hour following which he died,” a relative of the deceased said.

“Nabakishore Jena was received dead at the hospital. Dr RK Ghadei examined the patient properly and declared him dead. The family members of the patient ransacked the hospital in a fit of rage. They also manhandled doctors and drivers of the hospital. If such incidents keep on taking place at the hospital, doctors wouldn’t show interest to work here,” an official said.

“Investigation into the matter is on. An unnatural death case has been registered into the incident. We will examine CCTV footage to identify the persons involved in ransacking the hospital and action will be taken as per law,” a police official said.

On the other hand, specialist doctors of the hospital today staged cease-work agitation protesting the incident. The agitation was withdrawn after Puri SP Sarthak Sarangi assured them of 24×7 security at the hospital.
