Bargarh/Jharsuguda, June 1:

Three persons died and two went missing following separate incidents of boat mishap after a nor’wester lashed Jharsuguda and Bargarh districts in western Odisha early this morning.

The bodies of the three local  fishermen including a woman were fished out from different parts of the sprawling Hirakud reservoir this morning while efforts are on to locate the two missing fishermen, reports said.

According to reports, some fishermen from Bargarh and Jharsuguda districts had gone for fishing in the reservoir of Mahanadi river with their country boats in the afternoon hours on Saturday.

While fishing, they were hit by a nor’wester and unable to withstand the strong winds, the boats capsized.

Informing the media this morning, revenue divisional commissioner (RDC) Northern Division Pramod Meherda said all the three deceased belonged to Jharsuguda district.

While the fire brigade personnel have launched a rescue and search operation in the reservoir, sources said the death toll could rise further.

Reports said in the Bargarh district a man was killed when lightning struck him and a six-year-old boy died when a branch of a mango tree fell on him during the nor’wester .
