Amit Kumar Mandal of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the winner defeating his nearest rival Sanjay Prasad Yadav of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by a huge margin of 34, 551 votes.

Political pundits had predicted the result on the similar lines and Mandal pocketing the sympathy votes.

Amit Kumar Mandal is the son of deceased MLA Raghunandan Mandal and the by-poll was necessitated following his demise in January this year.

As many as 15 candidates were in the fray in the Godda by-poll where there was a triangular contest.

On Monday, voters in huge numbers turned out to cast their votes. Around 65 per cent voting was recorded in Godda assembly segment and the polling passed off peacefully.
