Bhubaneswar, Mar 6:
After hours of intensive grilling in police detention, local police this evening arrested former Odisha Congress MLA Ramesh Jena from Berhampur for illegal possessions of firearms, said a police source.
Three aides of Jena were also arrested. Prior to their arrest, the trio was brought to Berhampur from Bhubaneswar.
Jena and two of his associates were picked up by a joint team of Berhampur police from an apartment in Khandagiri area in the capital city early this morning during a raid.
Three mobile phones and various types of weapons had been seized from them during the raid, according to a source. Later, in another raid conducted at his Berhampur house two guns, five rounds of live bullets and Rs 10 lakh were seized.
Tension rang high in the Silk City after supporters protested in front of Town police station against detention of a Corporator, allegedly an aide of Jena.
Meanwhile, former Brahmagiri MLA and senior Congress leader Lalatendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra condemned the arrest of Jena terming it as “political conspiracy”.
“I think this is a political conspiracy. PCC chief Prasad Harichandan should intervene into the matter. Party would lend its support behind Jena,” he said.
