Bhubaneswar, May 10:
Five students of University Law College (ULC) affiliated to Utkal University here received minor injuries on Saturday when a group of students from the University entered the college demanding a certain amount for arranging farewell function for their seniors in the university and attacked them following a heated argument between them.
The five injured students, including the college president Ajit Kumar Parida, were admitted to a local hospital for treatment.
According to Ajit, a group of students, including Utkal University president Rajeshraj Swain, entered the Law College and asked for Rs 200 from each student towards expenses on the farewell scheduled later this month. When some of the male students questioned about the purpose of money collection without a notice conveyed to them, a heated argument broke out between the college students and outsiders (non-collegiate).
“When our students resisted the act of the Utkal University students, who belong to BJD party, all of the sudden a group of 50 students accompanying Swain attacked us and ransacked the college property. Importantly, Raja Panda, the Athletic Secretary of Law College and a BJD candidate, is unwilling to spend money for the farewell party for which the disturbances occurred today,” said the Law College president and a BJP backed Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) candidate.
The situation was brought under control after the Saheed Nagar police personnel intervened into the matter and drove out the outsiders from the college.
Both groups of students have lodged cases against each other seeking immediate action in the matter.
