First rake of export slabs from RSP flagged off

    The first rake of slabs of export quality made by the New Continuous Slab Caster-3 of the Steel Melting Shop-II of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), a unit of Maharatna Company, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) was flagged off for Thailand by Mr. G.S.Prasad, CEO, RSP on September 9.

    Mr. R.K.Nehru, ED (MM), Mr. M.K.Das, ED (Projects), Mr. S.K.Acharya, ED (Projects), Mr. V.Sankaranarayanan, GM In-charge (Works) and many senior officers of the plant were also present on the occasion.

    Notably, the New Continuous Slab Caster-3 was inaugurated by Mr. C.S.Verma, Chairman, SAIL on August 10, 2013. The caster has been built with state-of-the-art technology and this is the first despatch of slabs produced by the caster. The export quality slabs have been despatched after undergoing stringent quality tests in RSP. The tests include measurement of various quality parameters such as tolerance in thickness, width and length, checking of defects if any such as camber, twist and bulging etc.

    The rake consists of 43 wagons each carrying 3 slabs. Each slab weighs nearly 21.5 tons.  A total of 129 slabs have been despatched via rail route to Vizag port from where they will be shipped to Thailand by sea. The order has been prepared for M/s. Daewoo International Corporation, South Korea. This order will lead to generation of foreign exchange to the tune of $ 1.2 million.
