Bhubaneswar, Feb 18:
With the mercury soaring, fire engulfed large parts of the Chandaka forest division on the outskirts of Odisha capital yesterday.
The fire started at 10 am on Wednesday and 15 forest officers as well as youth from neighbouring villages struggled to douse the fire.
Later, around five fire engines were pressed into action and it took nearly two hours to bring the fire under control, according to forest department officials.
The Chandaka forest division officials are planning to dig trenches to control the fire and prevent further mishaps in the elephant sanctuary.
The fire might have spread after due to negligence of youths who had come for a picnic in the sanctuary, according to sources.
It may be recalled that large tracts of Chandaka forest were destroyed in a major fire in 2013.
