Bhubaneswar, Jul 22:
A fight over the booty from the sale of a stolen bike led to the murder of the youth behind the CBI office in the Odisha capital in the wee hours of Tuesday, commissionerate police said today.
Quoting from the interrogation of the two youths arrested for the murder, sources in the commissionerate police told OST that the two accused decided to eliminate Manas Swain after he demanded a bigger share of the proceeds from the sale of a bike they had stolen.
Both the deceased and the accused were members of a gang that has committed a series of crimes and have cases registered against them in various police stations in the city.
The leader of the bike-lifting gang—Abhinash Sethi – had an altercation with Swain in an inebriated state on Monday night during which the latter threatened to report the matter to the police if he was not given the amount demanded.
Incensed and alarmed by this, Abhinash and Shiba Nayak – from Paika Nagar Slum under Delta area in the city – hatched a plan to eliminate Swain at the earliest.
Within hours of the brawl, the duo hacked Manas with a chopper and dumped the body near the BDA Children’s Park behind CBI State Headquarters, a police officer said quoting the two accused.
Upon getting information from locals, Nayapalli police personnel rushed to the spot for investigation. During questioning of neighbours, one of them informed the police that these two youths had asked for phenyl and bleaching powder to clean the blood stains from their clothes.
Police grew suspicious and swooped on the suspects’ residence at Pailka Nagar Slum under Delta area. The two accused—drivers by profession—were arrested on Tuesday morning, barely hours after the incident.
Abhinash and Shiba were forwarded to a local court and sent to Jharpada Special Jail here today after their bail applications were rejected.
Meanwhile, reports of two more accused in the case absconding have turned out to be a red herring. Commissionerate police today made it clear that Abhinash and Shiba were the only two persons involved in the murder.
“The lookout for other accused person is over now. After thorough investigation, we have come to know that only two people were involved in the case,” Twin City Commissioner of Police Dr RP Sharma said today.
Commissionerate police, it may be noted, had said yesterday that it was on the look out for two more accused involved in the case.
