Bhubaneswar, Sept 19:
A youth was arrested for aborting his fiancée’s foetus by promising to marry her. The fiancée, a minor girl from Padmakesharipur in the outskirts of the city, was admitted to the Capital Hospital here on Thursday for treatment after the abortion.
The condition of the girl was critical after consuming medicines given by her fiancé for abortion. Sshe was admitted to the hospital after she complained of serious pain in her lower abdomen on Monday.
According to the girl’s mother Sasmita Das, her daughter had been betrothed to Sahadev Das in the presence of panchayat members in the month of March this year.
Das, who runs a betel shop at his village in Patia area, established a physical relationship after her engagement with the girl. In due course of time, the girl got pregnant.
The girl informed Das about the pregnancy three months after and pleaded for marriage at the earliest. But Das compelled her to go for abortion instead of marriage to avoid embarrassment.
Das reportedly gave her some medicine to abort the child. The girl took the medicine believing that he would marry her, but it left her in a critical condition. Due to the effect of medicine, she lost her child and fell ill. When her condition worsened, she was admitted in the hospital on Monday.
Keeping in view family prestige, the parents of the girl approached Das’ family to finalise the marriage proposal but the latter rejected it. The girl’s family then lodged a complaint with Mahila police here on Wednesday. Acting on the complaint report, the police arrested Das and forwarded him to the court on Thursday, said Mahila police sources.
