Bhubaneswar, Dec 14:
The winter session of the Odisha Assembly today witnessed pandemonium over the detention of farmers ahead of Chasi Samavesh (farmers’ convention) of Navanirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) here.
As the House assembled for the day, Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra raised the matter following which Congress members rushed to the well of the House and created ruckus.
Unable to run the House, Deputy Speaker Sanand Marandi adjourned the Assembly till 3 pm.
Following the adjournment, Congress MLAs went to Raj Bhavan here to meet Governor SC Jamir over the incident. They reportedly apprised the Governor about the problems of farmers and demanded release of those who have been detained.
Uproarious scenes continued when the House reassembled as Opposition members tried to climb Deputy Speaker’s podium. Congress Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati snatched the Deputy Speaker’s mike. Unable to run the House, Marandi initially adjourned the Assembly for one hour and later till tomorrow.
Amid ruckus, demands for grants of different departments were passed in guillotine.
Later, the BJP members staged a sit-in dharna near the Mahatma Gandhi statue on the Assembly premises protesting the detention of farmers.
“No representative of the NKS met me over their demands. I am unaware of their problems. I am always ready to discuss about the farmers’ issues,” said Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy.
“The act of the state government is undemocratic. Police have detained hundreds of farmers at several places across the state. They had come to attend a rally and express their displeasure to the government,” said Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra.
